TANG SHOW


         As China’s capital for 13 dynasties, Xian has an extraordinary history. The city is home to the famed Terracotta Warriors and many of China‘s most splendid art and archaeological wonders.
         As a tribute to Xian’s past, Shannxi Grand Opera House Theatre Restaurant brings this period of Chinese history to life in a spectacular performance involving more than 100 actors on stage. Combing authentic music and dance from this bygone era with elaborate costumes and splendid choreography, it is the only culture show in Xian complimented by classical Chinese orchestra. It is a show not to be missed.

         Situated near the city centre, this Las Vegas- style theatre restaurant is decorated in a style befitting an emperor and can comfortably seat 650 diners in its vast auditorium. And to compliment the show, our master chefs prepare a gourmet meal to whet the appetite of our distinguished guests.
         This extravagant cultural presentation, witnessed by many world state dignitaries, has been internationally acclaimed as the most rendition of life during the prosperous Tang Dynasty (618-917). The show has been performed more than 7,000 times since 1988 by the Tang Dance Troup, which includes some of the China’s most gifted artists.

 
List of program and background stories

1. Hua Qing Palace

Hua qing palace concert by Chinese traditional music instruments. Located by the foot of the mountain Lishan, Hua qing palace used to be the palace of the Tang emperors. It describes the conviviality in the palace.

 

2. White Sleeve Dance

This is a kind of folk dance which was very popular at the imperial court in the Tang Dynasty. It originated from the Wu kingdom, as early as the Jin dynasty (ad256-ad316) and became very popular in Central china during the Tang dynasty. In ancient china, ramie was the main material used to make the long sleeves for dancing. The background song is “On the white ramie” written by LIPO, a very famous poet in Tang Dynasty.

3. Panpipe solo “spring orioles songs”

This music was composed for the Tang Emperor Gao Zong . The music displayed an early spring scene of willow leaves, a peach flowers blossoming and hundred of birds singing in the bright sun.

 


4. Spring outing

This is a piece of famous Tang Dynasty music for ritual ceremonies. This music depicts a group of young girls returning from a spring outing, dancing and singing, wishing for happy future.

 


5. Masked Warriors

The Masked Warriors is a sorcerer’s dance meant to expel epidemic and ghost and to solicit wellbeing. During the Tang period, this masked dance would be performance in the courts and among the nobel people every New Year’s Eve.

 

6. Watching Bird and Catching Cicada

This is a great treasure of Tang mural painting and it reflects the life of a maid in the Tang imperial palace. Look at these three ladies, the one on the left is watching a bird, the one in the middle is watching a cicada and the one on the right is missing her relatives.

 

7. Trumpet solo “Harvesting Chinese Dates”

This trumpet solo shows the happy and touching scene where people, both old and young, celebrate the bumper harvest dates.

 


8. Fairy Dance in feathered Costume

This is one of the most popular music dances in the Tang dynasty. It was said that Emperor Xuan Zong was very good at music and poetry. One day he had dream touring the fairy lady in the palaces on the moon. He saw many fairy ladies in rosy cloud like costumes dancing and singing in the sky. When he woke up he composed a pieced of music based on his dream and asked Yang Yu Huan, his favorite concubine, to arrange and rehearse the beautiful dance and light music that we are going to enjoy now.

9. Percussion show gossiping ducks and hungry tiger

The percussion music you are going to enjoy is very popular around Xian and the yellow plateau, the music shows you through drums, cymbals gongs how ducks play, gossiping and quarrelling at the waterside; How a hurgry tiger comes down from the mountain, grinding its teeth in search of prey.


10. The Great Tang Rites and Music

The splendid collective dance, magnificent spectacle and colorful show reveals the unprecedented grander and glory of Tang Dynasty, the essence of oriental dane and music culture.
